How to turn a round wood picture frame
A round wooden picture frame is a face-plate turning project: a 10 to 14 inch disc of hardwood with a rabbet for the glass and a shaped profile on the front. The whole project takes about three hours and teaches face-plate mounting, parting-tool accuracy, and tear-out control on long-grain-to-end-grain transitions.
A round frame is one of the few woodworking projects that cannot be made without a lathe. The rabbet for the glass is a concentric circle on the back. No router jig can cut it as cleanly as a single plunge with a parting tool on a spinning blank.
You cannot make a true round frame with flat woodworking. A bandsaw can cut the outside circle and the inside hole, but you are left with no rabbet for the glass and no shaped profile on the front. You have a wooden donut, not a frame. The lathe is what makes the joinery for the glass and backing possible in a single setup, and it is what lets you put a real molded profile on the show face.
Why the Round Frame Belongs on the Lathe
A rectangular frame is four mitered sticks of stock, each one machined on a router table with a rabbet on the inside back edge and a profile on the front. You can build one with a chop saw and a router. A round frame has no straight edges anywhere. The rabbet is a continuous concentric circle on the back, the front profile is a concentric ring of beads or coves, and both have to be cut from a single piece of wood because there is no way to miter four arcs together cleanly.
That is exactly what face-plate turning does. The blank spins, the tool stays put, and every cut is automatically concentric with the axis of rotation. The rabbet is a simple plunge cut with a parting tool at a controlled depth and diameter. The front profile is whatever sequence of beads, coves, and ogees you want to run with a bowl gouge and a beading tool.
Order the glass cut to size from a local glass shop ($8-$12 per piece) and measure each piece with calipers before cutting the rabbet. Actual diameter runs 1/32 inch off the order spec about half the time.
The reason picture-frame turning gets recommended as an intermediate project is that it combines five separate face-plate skills in one piece: mounting flat stock without ruining the show face, controlling end-grain tear-out on a profile cut, parting accurately to a measured diameter, hollowing the back to a uniform thickness, and sanding into a corner. Get this project right and you have ninety percent of the skills you need for a shallow bowl.
Sizing the Frame for Standard Photos
The frame is sized from the photo backward. A standard photo is either 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10, and a round opening that shows the picture needs to be no smaller than the short dimension of the photo minus a small bezel overlap. The overlap covers the printer's bleed area and holds the photo in place against the back of the glass.

Tape that chart to the wall above the lathe. The glass diameter is always one inch larger than the opening because the rabbet shoulder needs at least a 1/2 inch ring of contact for the glass to register against. Order the glass cut to size from a local glass shop, about eight to twelve dollars per piece for standard window glass cut round, and measure each piece with digital calipers before you cut the rabbet, because the actual diameter typically runs 1/32 inch off the order spec.
Tools and Materials
You need a lathe with at least 12 inches of swing for a 10-inch frame, more for larger pieces. See the lathe sizing guide if you are buying for this project. Most mid-size lathes (Jet 1221, Powermatic 3520, Nova Comet) handle frames up to 12 inches diameter without issue.
The tool list is short:
- 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch bowl gouge for hollowing the back and profile work on the front
- 1/2 inch round-nosed scraper for cleaning the rabbet shoulder and the back relief
- 1/8 inch parting tool, the critical tool for the rabbet plunge cut
- 6 mm beading tool (optional) for clean beads on the front profile
- 1 inch skew (optional) for flat-bottomed work on the back relief
For mounting, you have two options. A 4-inch face plate with screws driven into a sacrificial waste block is the standard. The other option is a 4-jaw chuck gripping a tenon turned on the waste block; see the chuck types guide for which jaws fit. The chuck approach is faster but requires the waste block to be thick enough to turn a 2 inch diameter tenon, usually 3/4 inch minimum.
Materials beyond the wood: yellow PVA glue, one sheet of brown kraft paper (grocery bag paper works), the round glass cut to size, a 1/8 inch hardboard or foam-core backing cut to the same diameter as the glass, and small turn-button or sawtooth picture-hanging hardware for the back.
Wood Selection
The species choice for a picture frame is driven by three things: pore structure, stability, and the ability to take a fine edge on the rabbet without crumbling. Frames are wall-mounted in living spaces, which means humidity cycles, which means the wood needs to move predictably. See the broader wood selection guide for context.
Cherry is my first choice. It is closed-pore, dimensionally stable, takes a glassy surface straight off a sharp bowl gouge, and ages to a deeper color over the years on a wall. Hard maple is the second choice for a paler frame, with Janka 1,450 lbf, virtually no figure issues, and the tightest grain of any common American hardwood. Walnut runs a close third with the richest color, but the open pore at the spring-wood boundary requires either a pore filler or a thicker film finish to avoid telegraphing.
Avoid:
- Red oak and ash, because open ring-porous grain shows through every finish and the rabbet tears out at the pore lines
- Pine and other softwoods, because the rabbet shoulder crumbles under the weight of the glass
- Highly figured burl, because the chance of an explosion during the parting cut is real, and a face-plate explosion at 1,000 RPM throws debris hard
- Spalted wood, because soft punky zones make the rabbet inconsistent
The blank can be a single piece of stock or a glued-up panel. If you glue up from narrow boards, orient the grain so it runs across the frame in a single direction, not radially. Radial grain orientation looks busy and the wood movement is uneven around the circumference. Joint and clamp the boards, let the panel cure overnight, then cut the round blank on the bandsaw with a circle jig.
Blank Preparation and Mounting
The mounting method matters more on a picture frame than on most face-plate work because the show face cannot have screw holes. The solution is a glue block with a paper joint.
The glue block: Cut a piece of plywood or solid wood 5 to 6 inches in diameter and 3/4 inch thick. Screw it to your face plate with four 1-1/4 inch wood screws, mount the face plate on the lathe, and true the face of the glue block flat with a bowl gouge.
The paper joint: Cut a sheet of brown kraft paper to the size of the glue block. Apply a thin even coat of yellow PVA to both the glue block face and the back of the frame blank. Slap the kraft paper into the wet glue on the glue block, then press the blank firmly onto the paper, paper side to glue. Clamp with a tail-center cone or a sandbag, and let it cure for a minimum of eight hours, overnight is better.
The paper joint holds against turning forces and parts cleanly with a chisel tap when you are done. The whole assembly (face plate, glue block, paper joint, blank) is what gets mounted on the lathe headstock.
Before you start the lathe, always spin the blank by hand to confirm clearance from the tool rest and the bed. A 12 inch diameter blank needs the tool rest set just off the surface, with no contact when it spins.
Turning Sequence and Speeds
The face-plate RPM rule: diameter (in inches) times RPM should stay under 9,000 for the roughing cuts, and never above that limit for the first true-up pass on an unbalanced blank. For a 10 inch blank, that gives a ceiling around 900 RPM. For a 12 inch blank, around 750 RPM. The AAW publishes the same rule with a 6,000 ceiling for new turners and unfamiliar wood, and that is the safer starting point.

The sequence on the lathe goes:

True the blank face and outside diameter. Tool rest just below center, 3/8 inch bowl gouge with a 45 degree bevel, working from the rim toward the center on the face and right-to-left across the OD. Light cuts, watch for tear-out at the grain transitions.

Mark the inside opening and rabbet diameter on the face. Use the chart above. A pencil mark while the blank spins gives you a perfect concentric reference line.

Profile the front. This is where you choose what the frame looks like. A simple ogee profile is a cove transitioning to a bead, with the cove cut using the bowl gouge swung in an arc, bead cut with the beading tool plunged at the high point. Keep the profile inside your marked rabbet diameter so you do not turn into the eventual opening.

Bore the center opening. Mark the opening diameter on the face. Plunge the parting tool straight in along that line to a depth of about 1/4 inch, then use the bowl gouge to remove the waste from the center, working from the inside-out toward your parting line. The center waste falls out as a disc once you part through, so support it with your free hand or stop short and chisel it out off the lathe.

Sand the front profile and opening. Drop the RPM to the sanding column above. Work through 120, 180, 220, 320 grits on the spinning blank, then with the lathe stopped, sand by hand across the grain at every grit to remove the concentric scratches.

Reverse the blank. This is the second mounting. Unscrew the face plate from the headstock with the glue block and blank still attached. Carefully tap a wide chisel into the paper joint to split the blank off the glue block. The show face is now released. Re-mount the blank back-side-out on the same glue block, using a second paper joint and a fresh layer of PVA. Cure overnight again.

Cutting the Rabbet: The Critical Cut
The rabbet is what holds the glass, the photo, and the backing. Get this wrong and the frame is decorative junk.
With the blank mounted back-side-out, find the center of the back face. Mark the rabbet diameter (one inch larger than the opening — see the table above). Mark a second concentric circle 1/2 inch outside the rabbet diameter — that is the boundary for the back relief hollow.
Plunge the rabbet with the 1/8 inch parting tool. Tool rest at center height. Hold the parting tool perfectly perpendicular to the lathe axis so the plunge cut is square to the face, not tapered. Plunge straight in to a depth of 3/8 inch. Check the diameter with calipers after the first 1/8 inch of plunge depth — it is much easier to widen a rabbet by 1/32 inch than to recover from one that ended up 1/16 inch too narrow.
The rabbet should measure:
- Depth: 3/8 inch. Holds 2.5 mm (0.098 inch) glass + 1/16 inch photo + 1/8 inch hardboard backing with about 1/8 inch left over for the turn-buttons or sawtooth hardware.
- Diameter: 1/16 inch larger than the actual glass. Measured glass, not ordered glass. Wood expands and contracts seasonally; a press-fit glass cracks the first winter.
Hollow the back relief. This is the area outside the rabbet, in the ring of wood between the rabbet diameter and the outer edge. Hollow it down by 1/4 inch using the bowl gouge. The relief lets the frame sit flush against the wall instead of resting on its outer edge, and it lightens the back side of the piece visually.
The wall of wood between the rabbet shoulder and the back relief should end up 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick — that is the structural ring that carries the glass load. Thinner and it cracks under transport stress. Thicker and the frame looks chunky from the side.
Common rabbet failure: tapered plunge. If the parting tool is angled even 2 degrees off perpendicular, the rabbet shoulder ends up sloped and the glass either rocks on the high spot or falls through the low side. Use a small machinist's square against the tool rest and the parting tool blade to set the angle before the first plunge.
Sanding and Finishing
Sand the back relief and rabbet shoulder while the blank is still on the lathe — 120, 180, 220, 320 with the lathe at 500 RPM. The inside corner of the rabbet shoulder is the hardest spot to sand cleanly. Wrap a folded scrap of 220-grit sandpaper around a 1/4 inch dowel and use it like a file in the corner with the lathe stopped.
For finish, the choice depends on whether the frame goes in a wet area (kitchen, bathroom) or a dry area (bedroom, hallway). For dry indoor display, I use oil-and-wax: pure tung oil cut 50/50 with mineral spirits for the first coat, neat tung oil for two more coats, then carnauba paste wax buffed on the spinning frame at 500 RPM. For wet areas, three coats of wipe-on polyurethane (satin sheen) on a piece of clean cotton, sanded with 400-grit between coats. The poly seals out the humidity swings that would otherwise cause the wood to push the glass loose.
Do not put any finish in the rabbet itself. A finish-free rabbet grips the glass with friction; a finished rabbet lets the glass slide and shift as the wood moves.
Mounting the Glass, Photo, and Backing
Off the lathe, with the frame finished and cured, the assembly is straightforward.
The stack from front to back: glass, photo (face toward glass), 1/8 inch hardboard or acid-free foam-core backing. Drop them in the rabbet in that order. The whole stack sits 1/4 inch below the rabbet lip.
Secure with small brass turn-buttons screwed into the back relief at three evenly spaced points around the rabbet — twelve, four, and eight o'clock positions. Turn-buttons are a No. 4 wood screw with a small swivel washer that rotates over the lip of the backing board. Drill 5/64 inch pilot holes and drive the screws by hand to avoid splitting the back relief.
For hanging, a single brass sawtooth hanger nailed to the back relief at the top center is enough for a frame under 14 inches in diameter. Heavier frames need two D-rings and picture wire.
Common Mistakes
Rabbet too tight. Glass cracks the first winter when the wood contracts. Always cut the rabbet 1/16 inch oversize on the diameter.
Rabbet too shallow. Photo and backing protrude past the rabbet lip, turn-buttons cannot reach the backing, the assembly looks unfinished from the back. Cut to 3/8 inch depth minimum.
Center waste disc thrown by the lathe. When you part through to release the center, the inner disc becomes a high-velocity projectile if the lathe is still running. Stop the lathe before the final cut goes through, or hold the disc with a gloved hand from behind. Better still, leave a 1/16 inch web of wood at the center and chisel through it off the lathe.
Glue block lets go mid-turn. The paper joint requires at least eight hours of cure time and even glue coverage. A spot-glued joint or a half-cured one releases under turning load — the entire blank flies off the headstock. Always tap the cured joint with a fingernail before mounting and listen for a solid sound, not a hollow one.
Tear-out on the front profile. Long-grain to end-grain transitions on a flat disc happen four times per revolution. A dull bowl gouge tears the end grain instead of slicing it. Sharpen the gouge before the finishing pass — fresh bevel, light cut, fast feed.
Safety
A face-plate turning at 1,000 RPM carries enough kinetic energy to break a face shield or a hand if it comes off the lathe. The safety rules are not optional.
- Always wear a full face shield, not just safety glasses, for the entire turning sequence. A face plate failure throws wood at the operator's head.
- Spin the blank by hand before starting the lathe to confirm tool rest clearance and that nothing in the mounting setup is loose.
- Start at the lowest speed for the first true-up pass. Increase RPM only after the blank is round and balanced.
- Never wear loose clothing, gloves, or jewelry near the spinning lathe. A loose sleeve catches on a face plate and pulls a hand into the work.
- Keep the tool rest within 1/8 inch of the workpiece at all times. A wide gap lets the tool catch and lever down hard.
- Stop the lathe before reaching across the work, for example to mark a diameter line or check a measurement.
The species hazards for picture frame work are minimal — cherry, maple, and walnut are all low-toxicity. If you substitute an exotic species like cocobolo or padauk, wear a respirator rated for fine particulate, because the dust from those species causes sensitization reactions in 5-10% of woodworkers.
Variations
Beginner version: simple flat-faced frame. Skip the front profile entirely. Sand the front face flat, ease the inner and outer edges with a 1/4 inch round-over, and call it done. The whole project takes ninety minutes and teaches the rabbet cut without the complexity of profile work.
Intermediate version: ogee profile with one bead. Bowl gouge for the cove, beading tool for one clean bead at the outer edge. This is the standard version covered above and the one I recommend for a third or fourth face-plate project.
Advanced version: deep undercut bezel. Use 8/4 stock (1-3/4 inch finished) and turn a deep stepped profile on the front with two beads, a cove, and an undercut at the inner edge that creates a shadow line above the glass. Requires careful tool-rest positioning to reach the undercut, and the back relief gets hollowed deeper to keep the side-profile elegant.
