How to turn wooden fishing lures

A turned wooden fishing lure is a small spindle project, usually 2 to 6 inches long and under 1 inch in diameter, that crosses two hobbies that rarely overlap. The turning is straightforward. The finishing is where most builders fail. A lure that swims correctly and survives a season in the water needs through-wire construction, a fully sealed body, and a topcoat that does not crack when a 3-pound bass hits it at the end of a long cast.

I have turned lures from basswood, cedar, balsa, and tupelo. The shaping takes about 15 minutes on a mini lathe. The finishing (sealing, painting, epoxy topcoat) takes three days because each coat has to cure on a rotating turner before the next one goes on. This guide covers the part most fishing-lure tutorials skip: the lathe work, the wood selection, and the construction details that decide whether your lure casts straight and swims true.

Why turn lures instead of carving them

A lathe gives you radial symmetry that a knife or rotary tool cannot match. A symmetric body matters for a lure because asymmetric weight distribution causes the lure to roll sideways instead of swimming upright. Heddon's original wooden plugs from 1902 were lathe-turned for exactly this reason, and the production turners at Creek Chub and Pflueger worked from the same logic in the 1920s and 1930s.

A lathe produces radially symmetric lure bodies that swim straight instead of rolling sideways. Heddon's original 1902 plugs were lathe-turned for this reason, since asymmetric weight distribution kills a lure's action.

The other advantage is repeatability. Once you find a shape that works, a 4-inch cedar topwater for example, you can reproduce it in two minutes per blank. Carved lures vary. Turned lures are consistent, and consistency is what lets you fish a series of similar plugs in different colors and weights.

Drill the through-wire hole before turning, not after. A round blank rolls in a drill press vise and the hole wanders off-center. A square blank indexes flat and the hole runs true down the long axis.

Wood selection: density decides the lure style

The single most important variable for a wooden lure is the wood's density. Density determines buoyancy, which determines what lure style the blank can become. A floating topwater popper needs a wood under 25 lbs/ft³. A neutral-buoyancy jerkbait needs a wood around 25 to 30 lbs/ft³, typically with 1/4 to 1/2 ounce of internal lead weighting. A sinking jig or jerkbait works best with a denser hardwood and added ballast.

For your first lures, use basswood. It costs about $4 a board foot at most hardwood dealers, turns without fighting back, and accepts both acrylic paint and epoxy topcoat without surprises. Move to cedar once you want a more buoyant topwater, and try balsa when you want extreme buoyancy and erratic action. Lure styles you can turn on a mini lathe

Five lure styles cover roughly 90% of what a hobbyist will want to build:

  • Topwater popper. 3 to 4 inches, blunt nose with a concave cup, single belly treble and tail treble. Cedar or basswood.
  • Walk-the-dog plug. 4 to 5 inches, cigar shape tapering at both ends. Basswood. Two trebles.
  • Jerkbait. 4 to 6 inches, slender, neutral buoyancy. Basswood or balsa with internal lead weighting.
  • Glide bait. 5 to 7 inches, usually two-piece with a hinge between sections. Basswood or tupelo. Single belly hook.
  • Crankbait. 2 to 4 inches, fatter body, requires a lip slot cut after turning. Cedar or basswood.

Of these, the walk-the-dog plug is the easiest first project. It is a simple cigar shape with no concave cuts, no lip slot, and no hinge. You can rough out, finish-turn, and sand a basswood blank in under 15 minutes once you have your tool sequence down.

Tools and setup

You do not need much. Lure work is small spindle turning, which means a 3/8-inch spindle gouge, a 1/2-inch skew chisel, and a 1/8-inch parting tool will handle every cut. For the lathe itself, any mini lathe with variable speed will do. Models with a top speed of at least 3,500 RPM are ideal because lure blanks are small enough to spin at high RPM without vibration. The best mini wood lathe article covers specific models in detail.

Hold the blank between centers for roughing. For the final 2 minutes of shaping, when the diameter is small and the surface needs to be clean, switch to a small collet chuck or a jam chuck. Pieces under 3 inches long are unsafe between centers because the live center can split a thin blank under pressure.

Step-by-step: turning a 4-inch walk-the-dog plug

This is the procedure I use for a basswood walk-the-dog plug, finished diameter 7/8 inch at the thickest point.

  1. Cut the blank. Mill basswood to 1 inch square by 5 inches long. The extra inch is waste at the tailstock end for the live center. Mark centers on both ends with an awl.

  2. Drill the through-wire hole. Before turning. Chuck the blank in a drill press vise, set the depth stop, and drill a 3/32-inch hole straight through the long axis using a 6-inch aircraft bit. Spin the blank end-for-end if the bit wanders past 2 inches. Drilling after turning is harder because a round blank rolls in the vise.

  3. Mount between centers. Drive center at the headstock, live center at the tailstock. Set the lathe to 1,800 RPM. Spin the blank by hand first to confirm it clears the tool rest.

  4. Rough to round. With a 3/8-inch spindle gouge, work from the center toward each end. Aim for a uniform 7/8-inch cylinder along the working length, leaving a 1/2-inch waste collar at each end.

  5. Mark the profile. Stop the lathe. Pencil three diameter marks along the body: 5/8 inch at the nose, 7/8 inch at the belly (1.5 inches back from the nose), 5/8 inch at the tail. The shape is a tapered cigar, fattest just forward of center.

  6. Cut the profile. Bump the speed to 2,500 RPM. With the spindle gouge, cut from the high point toward each end. Work downhill, always, because cutting uphill on small spindle stock tears the grain.

  7. Finish-cut with the skew. Drop to 3,000 RPM. With the long point of the skew up and the bevel rubbing, take light planing cuts to remove tool marks. This is where small spindle turning gets clean. If you have not used a skew on small work before, practice on scrap until you can ride the bevel for the full length of the cut.

  8. Sand on the lathe. Drop to 1,200 RPM. Sand 180, 220, 320, 400 grit. Hold the abrasive lightly. Lure blanks heat up fast at small diameters and excessive friction will scorch the surface.

  9. Part off. Use the 1/8-inch parting tool to cut down to about 1/4 inch at each end. Finish the cuts with a small hand saw and clean up by hand. Do not part all the way through with the workpiece spinning, because small blanks fly.

Through-wire construction

Through-wire is the difference between a lure that survives 50 fish and a lure that loses its tail hook on the second strike. Two screw eyes, one for the line tie and one for the tail hook hanger, pull out of wood under repeated stress, especially after the wood has been soaked.

Through-wire uses a single piece of stainless steel wire (.041 or .051 diameter) running the full length of the body. Loops formed at each end provide the line tie at the nose and the tail hook hanger at the tail. The belly hook still hangs from a screw eye, but the two highest-stress attachment points are anchored by wire that cannot pull out.

Wire and components:

  • Stainless steel wire, .051 diameter (Malin or Eagle Claw), about 8 inches per lure
  • Round-nose pliers for forming loops
  • Two 6mm split rings
  • Two #4 or #6 treble hooks (Mustad 3551 or Owner ST-36 are the working standards)

Assembly order:

  1. Drill the 3/32-inch through-hole before turning (covered above).
  2. Turn and finish-sand the body.
  3. Cut a 7-inch length of stainless wire.
  4. Form a wrapped loop on one end using round-nose pliers. Make the loop, then wrap the tag end three times around the standing wire.
  5. Thread the loose end through the body from the nose to the tail.
  6. Form the second wrapped loop at the tail. Snug it against the wood with light pressure, but do not crush the blank.
  7. Trim tag ends flush.
  8. Install belly screw eye after sealing (covered below).

The wire stays inside the body permanently. Both terminal loops accept split rings, which accept the trebles. A lure built this way handles fish well into the 5- to 10-pound range without hardware failure.

Sealing and finishing for waterproofness

A turned lure body is end-grain at both ends and porous everywhere else. Water gets in through any unsealed spot, swells the wood, and lifts the paint. The fix is a layered finishing system: a sealer, a primer, paint, and a two-part epoxy topcoat. Total time is about three days because each layer cures on a lure turner.

Layer 1, Sealer. Two coats of thinned propionate (Devcon clear, dissolved in acetone, about 50/50) wiped on. Alternatively, two coats of Minwax wood sealer or two thin coats of two-part epoxy. The goal is to fill the pores and lock down loose grain. Let cure overnight.

Layer 2, Primer. One coat of white acrylic primer applied with an airbrush or a foam brush. Allows color paints to read true. Cure 4 hours.

Layer 3, Paint. Airbrush acrylic paints (Createx Wicked, Createx Illustration) for color, scales, and gill patterns. Multiple thin coats. Cure 2 hours between coats, 12 hours after the last coat.

Layer 4, Topcoat. Two coats of two-part epoxy. Devcon 2-Ton (30-minute working time) is the rod-builder's standard, Etex Lite is the alternative with a longer pot life. Mix small batches by weight on a scale. Brush on, then immediately put the lure on a turner rotating at 6 to 9 RPM. Rotate continuously for 4 hours until the epoxy gels. Recoat after 24 hours.

A lure turner can be as simple as a barbecue rotisserie motor with hooks taped to the spit. Without rotation, epoxy pools at the bottom of the lure and you end up with a lopsided dome. I have tried it without a turner once. Do not do that.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the through-wire hole before turning. Drilling a round blank end-to-end is much harder than drilling a square one. Do it first.
  • Sanding too aggressively on small diameters. A 5/8-inch blank at 2,000 RPM scorches in seconds. Drop the RPM for sanding and keep the paper moving.
  • Using polyurethane or shellac as a topcoat. Both are too brittle. The first fish that hits the lure cracks the finish and water gets in.
  • Mixing epoxy by eye. Two-part epoxy must be 1:1 by weight (or by volume, depending on the brand). Off-ratio mixes either never cure or stay tacky forever.
  • Painting before sealing. Acrylic paint soaks into bare wood unevenly and looks blotchy.
  • No internal weight on jerkbaits or jointed lures. Buoyant wood plus light hardware equals a lure that floats nose-up like a dead fish. Drill a small ballast hole on the belly side and set a 1/4-ounce lead split-shot in epoxy before painting.

Safety

Small piece turning has its own set of risks that differ from bowl or larger spindle work.

  • Always wear a full face shield, not just safety glasses. A 5/8-inch blank that lets go at 3,000 RPM still has enough energy to break a tooth.
  • Check that the workpiece is secure before starting the lathe. Spin it by hand first. Pieces under 3 inches long do not belong between centers — use a collet chuck or jam chuck instead.
  • Start at the lowest speed for new or unbalanced blanks, then increase gradually.
  • Never wear loose clothing, gloves, or jewelry near a spinning lathe.
  • Keep the tool rest as close to the workpiece as possible — within 1/8 inch.
  • When drilling the through-wire hole on a drill press, clamp the blank firmly in a vise. Do not hold a small blank by hand under the bit.
  • Mix and apply two-part epoxy with ventilation. Epoxy resin and hardener fumes are milder than lacquer or acetone but accumulated exposure causes sensitization. A workshop fan with a cracked window is enough.
  • Lure woods like cedar carry respiratory irritants in their dust. Wear an N95 mask during sanding.

A note on FWW research

The Fine Woodworking archive (issues 1 through 296) has no dedicated article on turning fishing lures. The closest references appear in small spindle turning coverage — for example, articles on turning small finials and ornaments, where the holding methods (jam chuck, collet chuck, drill chuck on the headstock) are identical. The American Association of Woodturners (AAW) journal has occasional builder profiles of lure-makers, particularly for decorative or fly-fishing patterns, and the AAW chapter newsletters are a better source for project-specific lure techniques than the major woodworking magazines.

What this gets you

A lure that you turned, sealed, painted, and finished yourself will cost roughly $4 in wood, $2 in hardware, and $3 in finishing materials — call it $10 per lure including a fair share of the epoxy. A comparable production wooden plug from a small builder (Bagley, Smithwick, or any of the boutique makers) runs $15 to $40. The economics are not the point. The point is that you control the size, the action, the color, and the weight, and after a season of fishing you can adjust the next batch based on what worked.

Start with three blanks of basswood, a single cigar shape, and one color scheme. Get the finishing process down before you start chasing exotic profiles. Once you can produce three matched plugs that swim straight and survive a tackle box bumping around in the bottom of a boat, the rest of it — crankbaits with lips, jointed glide baits, popper cups — is just variations on the same skill.
